James Tredwell published the first Haitian Constitution to become widely known in the U.S., just about two years after Prince Saunders published the Haytian Papers in London. Saunders’ work were similar documents but from the Northern Haitian kingdom of Henri Christophe. Haytian Papers: A Collection of the Very Interesting Prince Sanders () was an African-American teacher and advocate of black American emigration to Africa and Haiti. When Sanders was on a speaking tour of England he met abolitionist William Wilberforce, who encouraged him to go to Haiti and meet Pages: Haytian Papers. While in Haiti, Saunders wrote the Haytian Papers, which was then published in London. The book was his translation of the laws of Haiti, and his commentary on those laws.
